The New Year’s Resolution Gift

The funny thing about presents is that no matter what is wrapped underneath, there is still an air of excitement around it. There are countless possibilities that we start to dream up well before we start pulling away at the paper. And once the paper is gone, the reality of the gift takes shape. Maybe it was something you’d been deeply desiring, or it was a completely delightful surprise. The other reality is it could be not at all what you expected, wanted, or even needed, and so the gift completely bombs and the feeling of letdown hits.

I believe that’s how New Year’s resolutions can feel by this time of the year. December 31st was full of hope wrapped in glittery paper. You know what you wanted to have happen and couldn’t be more excited about it. However, that gift likely came with a lot of parts needing assembling. Hell, some of the pieces may have even been missing and you have no idea how to even get them.

Now it sits in the corner, collecting dust and taking up mental space of disappointment and maybe a little regret. But it doesn’t have to be that way, because picking up where you left off on week two of the new year is well within your control. You just need to create a little momentum.

Why Discipline Alone Doesn’t Work

The big thing I see people go wrong here is thinking all they need is discipline. I even see coaches preaching about how it’s not motivation that moves the needle, it’s discipline to be consistent. But let me ask you this: how do you get motivated to be disciplined?

You see, discipline cannot be created out of thin air. This is not bad news. It’s actually a relief to know that discipline resides within our control, and I’m going to walk you through creating it with the right type of motivation: intrinsic.

Intrinsic Motivation and the Real “Why”

Intrinsic motivation is what you feel deep in your soul. There’s a visceral reaction to it when you call upon this motivation to carry you forward through the tough things. This isn’t about coveting another person’s body type. This isn’t just to feel smoking hot in a bikini. I mean, that can create the spark, but it won’t catch into becoming a fire of discipline if it doesn’t ignite within your soul.

Digging Down to Your Core Motivation

So how do we create this inferno? We ask ourselves why it’s important to us. Then we ask ourselves why that part is important to us. We keep digging deeper and deeper until we reach our core.

I’ll share mine:

Why do I want to be fit?

Because clients will take me more serious if I look the part of a fit personal trainer

Why is that important to me?

Because I want my business to be successful

Why is having a successful business carrying such importance?

Because I can care for my family financially, which also signals I’m making an impact on people’s health.

Why is impacting people’s health so important to me?

Because I watched my father pass away after not prioritizing his health. I too have overcome health issues and it’s empowering to know I have that control to avoid pain and illness. I want others to experience the same while avoiding what my father went through.

Boom. There it is.

How Your “Why” Creates Discipline

The days I want to skip the gym and come up with a million excuses, it is that “why” that motivates me to remain disciplined in my fitness goals. It moves me deeply. It brings that fire to push myself forward.

The Missing Piece: Embodiment

Now, if you’ve been following along, you can take it a step further. If you haven’t paused to think through your why, do so now. I’ll wait.

Got it now? Good, because this next part is important. This was another piece that was missing from the New Year’s resolution gift you were giving yourself: embodiment.

Living Like the Future Version of You

If you woke up tomorrow and couldn’t look in the mirror but knew you’d arrived in your fit, healthy body, how would you go about your day? How would your morning start? What would you be eating? What’s on your schedule? What are you wearing? How would you be taking care of yourself? How would you be speaking to yourself?

Remember, just because you woke up fit doesn’t mean it happened by accident.

The M.O.V.E. Method

Embodiment is truly where all parts of my M.O.V.E. Method live:
Motivation to be disciplined and consistent
Optimization in fitness, nutrition, and health overall
Visualization of what’s possible
Embodiment of all these elements both before it happens and when the goals are reached

Putting the Pieces Together

There you have it. The gift that’s been sitting in the corner these last couple of months is now complete. You have the instructions. You have the parts. Everything is there. It’s time to put it all together and enjoy.

One last thing. It’s okay to ask for help. That is what coaches are there for. Remember that health is not a gift of luxury. It is a necessity that carries you through the best years to come.

Simple Action Steps (Today!)

You don’t need to restart your entire resolution. You just need to create a little momentum.

1. Write down your real “why.”
Ask yourself why your goal matters. Then ask why that answer matters. Keep digging until you reach something that truly moves you.

2. Identify one small action that aligns with that “why.”
It might be going for a walk, planning tomorrow’s meals, or scheduling your next workout.

3. Act like the future version of you for one decision today.
Ask yourself: What would the healthiest version of me do right now? Then do that.

4. Create one supportive habit.
This could be prepping your gym clothes, planning meals, or setting a consistent bedtime.

5. Keep it simple and repeat tomorrow.
Momentum builds discipline far faster than perfection.

FAQ

Why do most New Year’s resolutions fail?

Many resolutions rely on short bursts of motivation rather than a deeper intrinsic reason for change. Without a meaningful “why,” it becomes difficult to stay consistent when challenges arise.

What is intrinsic motivation?
Intrinsic motivation is the internal drive that comes from personal values and meaning rather than external rewards. It is often what sustains long-term discipline and behavior change.

What does embodiment mean in health and fitness?
Embodiment means living today in alignment with the habits and behaviors of the person you want to become, rather than waiting until you reach your goal.

How do I stay disciplined with my health goals?
Discipline often follows clarity and purpose. When you understand why your goal matters and structure your environment to support it, consistency becomes easier.

Is it too late to restart my goals for the year?
Not at all. Progress is rarely linear. Picking up where you left off and focusing on small daily actions can quickly rebuild momentum.
