A Voice Note That Said Everything

It was the end of the week and so I was sending out voice notes to invite clients to look back at the week and take stock of their wins from the past few days. A client came back, and I could immediately hear the emotion in her voice. She was going through a heavy moment of self-doubt and guilt over taking time to herself that week. Overwhelm had crept in and she was drowning in it.

When Self-Doubt Shows Up

I have to say, it’s not uncommon to hear a client hit these types of walls. They’re spending money on themselves and doing things wildly different from before. This is usually before the results start to show and they’re still finding room in their life for their own wellbeing. When I say I help people get out of their own way, this is mostly what I’m talking about.

The Many Forms of Self-Sabotage

Self-sabotage comes in many forms. It’s not always silent. It’s not necessarily cravings that are hard to resist, or lack of energy to get up and do the things that will ultimately help give you more energy. It’s this overwhelming heaviness that zaps any self-worth and replaces it with self-doubt.

People think the hard part is the workouts, but the real weight we’re carrying around is in our heads and in our hearts.

Why a Health Journey Is So Personal

A health and wellness journey is deeply personal, more than what is normally talked about. Of course the throughline can be pretty universal. We all want to feel good, have more energy, and live life resiliently. However, everyone’s path looks different.

Even two people on the same fitness and nutrition plan are facing down their own unique challenges. One has the time after work, but has deep cravings with her afternoon crashes and knees that give her trouble. The other is a stay-at-home mom that can’t get a consistent babysitter and faces nightly dinner meltdowns with a toddler anytime there's a veggie on the plate.

The Roadblocks People Don’t See

There are the physical roadblocks, like getting a babysitter. But then there are the mental ones, like feeling tired of not having reliable help and therefore thinking you should just give up even trying.

The latter part is where self-leadership comes in and where we tap into what is truly important. In this instance, it’s getting a mental break and building up a strong body so we can keep up with the daily demands of holding down the home front.

Recharging the Battery

Of course, knowing it and doing it are two different things. In the case of my client, we really needed to tap into what her needs versus what others needed of her. Slowly, we’ve been building out habits and routines while looking at what she can discern isn’t serving her, or can be handed off to someone else to handle.

The point that I wanted to make was not only how incredible she truly is, and the capacity she has for taking care of others. But the fact is she’s been doing it all running on low battery. So just imagine how much more capacity she would have if she were to plug herself in and go to full charge.

Absolutely unstoppable.

Simple Action Steps (Today!)

  • Identify one thing this week that drains your energy unnecessarily.

  • Give yourself permission to take one small block of time for your own wellbeing.

  • Ask yourself what you truly need rather than only responding to what others need from you.

  • Remove or delegate one responsibility that isn’t serving you.

  • Remember that caring for yourself increases your capacity to care for others.
