The Habits That Bookend My Day
There are two things I will absolutely do every day to bookend my day. It’s almost like a loving gesture to my future self, and it’s what I remind myself I’m doing when I don’t feel like doing it.
Those are:
Going to bed with a clean and put-away kitchen
Making my bed when I first get up
Why a Clean Kitchen Matters
This first one is something I know not many people will do. In fact, the kitchen may nearly always be in a constant state of disorder. As someone who works from home, has a husband that largely works from home, and kids that are homeschooled, there is rarely a moment throughout the day that it is entirely put away.
However, I have slowly over the years instilled the same appreciation of a clean kitchen with my family. And by “instilled” I mean I finally started losing my crap when my wishes landed on deaf ears. But even in my emotional rants, I made it clear as to why it’s helpful to all of us that once they’re done with an item that it gets put away or washed.
Creating Peaceful Mornings
By the end of the night, even when I’m tired, I think of how peaceful my early morning feels when there’s zero clutter and filth and I can go straight into having my morning cup of coffee. Slow mornings, even if it means waking up early, is how I love starting my day.
I would pass along this same advice to those with hurried mornings. I know I hated how much extra time it seemed to take looking for a clean bowl, losing track of where I put the peanut butter while making a quick sandwich for lunch, and then how chaotic everything felt once I got home from a hectic day to find limited cooking space for dinner.
As I stated, leaving a clean kitchen for myself first thing in the morning, even if it meant staying up a little later has been well worth it for me. I get to start the next day without the previous day’s leftover mess.
The Power of Making Your Bed
When it comes to making the bed, that has been nearly a lifetime non-negotiable for me. Just like the chaos of the kitchen, the chaos of both seeing messy sheets and climbing into them at night has always felt unsettling.
I get that it could just be me, but I also find that the bed can be extra surface area for laying out the clothes you’re going to wear, folding laundry, or sitting to have a phone conversation.
The room just looks significantly tidier and there’s less chance of losing things in the mess. I also feel more at peace climbing into crisp, cool sheets at night. Again, it’s like morning me gifting evening me a soothing good night.
Small Habits, Big Impact
I’ve found these practices have spilled over into other things as well. By staying on top of the basics, I spend less time hunting for things. I also like to see the rest of the house picked up as much as possible. Even straightening up the couch cushions makes the living room look more pulled together.
Essentially, we’re keeping the home’s statement pieces looking good even if the rest of the house isn’t pristine.
Reducing Stress Through Environment
The reason I made an entire blog out of this is actually to help reduce overall stress when you think about it. Stress management is one of the big rocks of health, and so highlighting simple chores that can make a big impact on how we start and end our days can help be a catalyst in taking better care of ourselves in other ways.
I truly believe that.
Building Your Own Routine
So think of what you’d like your mornings and evenings to feel like and then make a couple adjustments that help support that. You can start small and keep adding on once those get to feel easier.
It’s adding these things on over time that make the biggest lasting changes for us in the long run.

Simple Action Steps
Clean and reset your kitchen before bed.
Make your bed every morning.
Focus on creating calm start and end points to your day.
Keep frequently used spaces tidy.
Build habits slowly and consistently.
